Public Consultation: Draft Map of Bush Fire Prone Areas

  • 2023 Review of the Map of Bush Fire Prone Areas

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) has released the draft Map of Bush Fire Prone Areas (Map) for public comment.

The Map identifies land in Western Australia that has the potential to be impacted by bushfires. This land is designated by the Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner.

DFES has revised the Map which has:

    • enhanced the accuracy of the Map in the Perth, Peel, and Greater Bunbury Region Scheme Areas; and
    • identified suburbs that may pose lower bushfire risk due to being significantly developed.

Bush Fire Prone Areas have been revised to reflect the changes to on-ground vegetation and the updated Mapping Standard for Bush Fire Prone Areas.

The draft Map introduces new categories to describe bushfire risk. The categories will be Area 1 (significantly developed or built-up urban areas) and Area 2 (rest of the State).

DPLH recently closed public consultation on the draft SPP 3.7 and the Guidelines that responded to changes to the draft Map. If you require more information regarding the DPLH consultation process, please refer to the DPLH Consultation Hub website.

DFES welcomes feedback on the draft Map via the form below.

    • Question – Area 1 comprises suburbs or portions of suburbs that are significantly developed and have relatively little contiguous vegetation. The characteristics of Area 1 reduce the risk of landscape-scale bushfires to facilitate contextualized planning policy responses. Refer to the Mapping Standard for more information. Do you support the introduction of Area 1 for locations that present a lower level of landscape-scale bushfire risk?

    • Question – Vegetation that is managed in perpetuity may be able to be removed from the Map. To facilitate this, please provide any relevant information about vegetation management practices or initiatives within your agency or department that would warrant exclusion as bushfire-prone vegetation. Refer to the Mapping Standard for more information. Do you have any land being managed by your local government, department or agency recommended for removal as bushfire-prone from the Map of Bushfire Prone Areas?
