The Department of Justice offers a resource to the community through unskilled or semi-skilled labour undertaken by low risk, minimum-security prisoners.
Community groups wishing to benefit from labour provided by work camp and section 95 prisoners need to:
- identify suitable projects
- provide all materials, specialised tools and equipment
- arrange specialised supervision if and when it is required (eg where the expertise of a builder or tradesperson is required).
When considering your request, the Department of Justice will give preference to work that:
- is project based
- improves community infrastructure and assets
- adds value and complements other projects and initiatives already being undertaken by community volunteers
- is highly visible and used by the local community and tourists alike
- is skills-based and offers the potential to involve the prison education centre and the local TAFE in accreditation training opportunities
- falls under the main four categories of heritage, environmental, recreation and tourism and local community services/projects.
